Although, it has been a long time since the original "Family Ties" premiered - and heavily criticized for its moral ambiguity - we can still recognize its significance as an iconic 1980s American family drama. Maybe the reason why we're still so fascinated and profoundly moved by this film is because of its roots: "Family Ties" was based on a novel by Irving Stone, whose wife was friends with Norman Mailer. The movie aired just in time for Thanksgiving in 1982, when Americans would be eating turkey with their families waiting to see if the postal workers union would prevail in their strike. The postal workers ended up winning in 1983's "The Right Stuff. " The video record of Thanksgiving wasn't that great or definitive though, and neither is "Family Ties" . Its source novel was better written, and it's a more accurate depiction of family life in America during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Many would argue that the most memorable aspect of the show is the relationship between Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) and his brother, Steven (Michael Gross). Family members always feel they have to take care of each other when people are being victimized in their lives. Alex's first duty to his family is to listen to what his parents have to say about them - even if he doesn't agree with them. Alex then has the duty of explaining to Steven that he should listen to his mother and father too, even though he disagrees with them too. That's not because Steven idolizes or agrees with his parents - but because everybody deserves respect, especially your parents. However, this episode proves that "Family Ties" is more than just a pro-family show. It's one of the most progressive shows that exists on network television. None of the characters are perfect, yet they always try their hardest, even when they're competing against each other in their own lives. Being an acclaimed TV show in the early 1980s didn't mean that "Family Ties" could get away with being politically incorrect or offensive toward its characters. Once Alex was being disrespectful to his father, Elyse would tell him very clearly why he was wrong - and she wouldn't be afraid to voice her opinion, either. Sometimes it's better to be brutally honest with people when they're not acting right, because it's just part of being a family. The show also worked hard to keep its strong sense of what traditional family values are all about. Alex P. Keaton was the typical conservative American male - he wanted to make his own way in life, without any help from anybody. Alex decided to go to college, but he never chose anything else other than everyone else. He didn't want to be a doctor or a lawyer, so everyone would know that he chose an "easy" major - even though it was music. Alex felt that hard work and ambition didn't lead you anywhere in the long run, so he decided to do something that was just for fun - even though his parents begged him not to. cfa1e77820
