Being an acclaimed TV show in the early 1980s didn't mean that "Family Ties" could get away with being politically incorrect or offensive toward its characters. Once Alex was being disrespectful to his father, Elyse would tell him very clearly why he was wrong - and she wouldn't be afraid to voice her opinion, either. Sometimes it's better to be brutally honest with people when they're not acting right, because it's just part of being a family. The show also worked hard to keep its strong sense of what traditional family values are all about. Alex P. Keaton was the typical conservative American male - he wanted to make his own way in life, without any help from anybody. Alex decided to go to college, but he never chose anything else other than everyone else. He didn't want to be a doctor or a lawyer, so everyone would know that he chose an "easy" major - even though it was music.
