It was a wet June evening when Jacob went to see what would happen when his dog, Sally, met another dog. "Becca!" he called out. "Hey! Come here boy!" The other owners looked over with curiosity as the two dogs trotted up to each other and sniffed each other's bodies. Then the redhead woman laughed and crouched down to say something in her companion's ear. For a moment, Sally stuck her head over the woman's shoulder but then pulled back quickly before pawing at Jacob who was strangely fascinated by what she had just seen. One minute later, the two were running off together in joyous leaps, tails wagging furiously until they disappeared around the corner of an alleyway. Day after day, Jacob would take his dog off to have a romp with Becca and other dogs alike. Each time Sally would sit by her new friends' side, gaze up at him and wag her tail excitedly. She never seemed to grow tired of this new activity, thus Jacob didn't mind taking her on every outing that he could. On one Wednesday evening however, he came back from dinner with Becca and found Sally waiting for him anxiously at the door. He picked up the dog in his arms and patted her gently on the back before asking what was wrong. "Come on," she said. "Let's get going. Becca is waiting for us." "But why?" said Jacob, puzzled. "It's not like we don't see Becca every day, and besides she's my dog not yours." "Becca won't come," said Sally. "She's sad because she doesn't have a friend to play with anymore." "I think I can fix that," said Jacob. He ran up the street with Sally at his side until they came to a park across from Becca's home. Mary was playing in the grass with her two dogs when he stopped in front of her and grunted a goodbye to the other dogs before slipping his arm around Sally who seemed startled by this strange behavior from her master. "Becca," he said. "Come here." The other dogs looked up with raised eyebrows, clearly confused by the man's erratic behavior. "Go get Becca," Jacob told Sally who trotted off enthusiastically towards the other owners. As Sally dashed into the grass, Mary came to her side and began speaking to her companion in low tones of softness. Sally stood quietly while watching Mary's face for any sign of anger but instead she saw only calm acceptance there. Jacob had no idea what they were saying to each other but when they both stepped forward onto their hind legs, he saw Becca shuffle across the grass with a small smile on her face before she brought herself down again on all fours again. "Becca," he said. "Come on." She turned around to look at him with a surprised expression on her face before slowly making her way back into the grass with Sally in tow. Sally ran around in circles around them both but it was clear she was enjoying herself more than any of them, especially Jacob who had never seen his dog so energetic before. "That's enough," said Mary. "Becca's my friend and she's invited you to join in a game of fetch Anton," she told the other owners who looked from Jacob to Becca and back again in confusion before looking from one owner to the other in question. "That thing is crazy," said one man. cfa1e77820
